BMG (Buccal Mucosal Graft) Urethroplasty is a surgical procedure used to repair urethral strictures (narrowing of the urethra) by grafting tissue from the inner cheek (buccal mucosa) to reconstruct the urethra. It is considered the gold standard for long-segment strictures.
Symptoms Leading to BMG Urethroplasty
Urethral strictures can cause:
- Weak or slow urine stream
- Straining to urinate
- Pain during urination (dysuria)
- Frequent urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Incomplete bladder emptying (leading to retention)
- Urinary spraying or dribbling
- Blood in urine (hematuria)
Types of Urethroplasty (BMG is One Option)
1. Buccal Mucosal Graft (BMG) Urethroplasty
- Most common, uses inner cheek tissue (buccal mucosa).
- Graft is placed in the urethra to widen the stricture.
- High success rate (~85-90%).
2. End-to-End Anastomosis (for short strictures)
3. Penile Skin Graft Urethroplasty (alternative if BMG not suitable)
4. Staged Urethroplasty (for complex cases)
When is BMG Urethroplasty Needed?
- Failed direct vision internal urethrotomy (DVIU).
- Long (>2 cm) or recurrent strictures.
- Bulbar urethral strictures (most common site).
