Bilateral Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (B/L PCNL) with DJ A minimally invasive surgical technique called stenting can be used to remove complicated or large kidney stones from both kidneys. To break up and remove stones, a nephroscope is inserted through tiny back incisions. To guarantee drainage and avoid blockage, Double-J (DJ) stents are inserted in both ureters. Compared to open surgery, the treatment has a faster recovery time and is helpful for staghorn calculi or numerous bilateral stones. Bleeding, infection, and stent pain are among the risks.
Symptoms Before Surgery (Due to Kidney Stones)
- Flank pain (severe, colicky pain on one or both sides).
- Hematuria (blood in urine).
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs) (fever, burning urination).
- Nausea/vomiting (due to pain or obstruction).
- Decreased urine output (if obstruction is severe).
Symptoms After Surgery (Post-PCNL & DJ Stent Placement)
Common & Expected Symptoms (First Few Days to Weeks)
- Mild hematuria (pink/red urine) – Due to stent irritation.
- Urinary frequency/urgency – DJ stent can irritate the bladder.
- Flank or bladder discomfort – Especially during urination.
- Mild pain at incision site – From the PCNL tract.
- Mild fever (low-grade) – Normal inflammatory response.
Symptoms Requiring Medical Attention (Possible Complications)
- Severe pain/uncontrolled bleeding – May indicate infection or injury.
- High fever/chills – Sign of UTI or sepsis.
- No urine output – Suggests blocked stent or kidney dysfunction.
- Pus/discharge from incision site – Indicates infection.
- Stent migration symptoms (severe pain, inability to urinate).
